Soft or Hard Landing for 2024?

Lois Tullo ICD.D MBA CPA – Schulich School of Business

Lois will discuss the future of 2024 examined in the light of history, and a comparison to recession in the 1980s. There are similarities of Interstate conflict, oil crisis, inflation and interest rates, and differences in debt levels (government, corporate, and personal), demographics, housing, power shift, cyber dependency, and environmental factors. The implications for Canadians, Financial Institutions (specifically credit), and for all levels of government will be discussed.

Lois Tullo is an expert in the area of risk, finance, compliance and corporate governance. She has over 30 years of business experience spanning financial services, technology, cryptocurrency, telecommunications, strategy consulting, raising venture capital, M&A, and natural resources. She has over 20 years of Board experience as Chair, Treasurer, and Risk and HR Committee Chair, for a tier 1 bank, private sector and not-for-profit organizations. She is also a conference speaker and author. Lois is a faculty member at the Schulich School of Business, York University, where she teaches risk management, cyber security, data and IT risk, and financial services to various programs. She is the author of the whitepaper Enterprise Risk Management – Canadian Best Practices, and was previously CFO for CIBC Finance Inc. where she was responsible for a $6 Billion credit portfolio.

AI in Credit, Liquidity Management and Reporting

Emerging requirements resulting from IFRS 9 and recent interest rate volatility demand a more hands-on approach in actively managing credit portfolios and liquidity. In this presentation, we will review tangible examples of how Machine Learning algorithms can help in developing early warning signals, measuring and mitigating risk severity, and reporting automation.

With over 25 years of experience in positions with management responsibility, and as a consultant, Sohail specializes in the development, testing and validation of financial and enterprise risk modelling applications and assists clients with implementation of the cutting-edge AI algorithms for reporting & automation.

During his period at Oliver Wyman, Moody’s and Nexx Consultants, Sohail led and delivered Risk, Treasury, Finance and Strategy projects at over 40 clients across Asia, EMEA and North America. More recently Sohail tested and validated Structural Interest Rate Risk and ALM models for 30+ banks in North America.
